Just back from… Salta, Argentina

Argentina is our most popular destination in South America – for good reason – but while many people limit their itineraries to Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Iguassu Falls, and Patagonia, I suggest stepping off the beaten path with some time in the northwest region of the country. Among the diverse highlights are the colonial city of Salta , the gorgeous red canyons in the Valles Calchaquies , the wine region of Cafayate , the jungle en route to Tucúman , the rolling hills of Cachi, the Salinas Grandes (salt flats), and the smaller indigenous towns of Purmarca and Humahuaca , which feel more Peruvian than Argentinian. The region is just waking up to the luxury tourist market but there are several properties that truly impressed me. The House of Jasmines is a seven bedroom country home just outside of Salta – its previous owner was actor Robert Duvall and his Argentine wife. The food and spa are both spectacular, achievements even more notable because of the small size of the property. The other property I loved is Patios de Cafayate. Located in the heart of the Calchaquies Valley wine region, this traditional colonial-style hotel is set amid colorful gardens on the El Esteco Winery Estate. After a day visiting the many nearby wineries, head to their gorgeous pool and then enjoy a gourmet dinner of excellent regional specialties. I would love to talk to anyone about a customized journey to Argentina; please contact me with any questions about Salta or any other areas of Argentina.
