NEW DESTINATION: TUNISIA

What surprised me most about Tunisia after my recent trip is how unusual it is – geographically located in North Africa but with a long Mediterranean coastline and a distinctly Arab flavor, Tunisia felt both exotic and familiar. Though it has a pretty coast, I recommend going to learn about its fascinating culture and history rather than to lie on the beaches. It is a modern, secular, and very safe country with so much to offer, from Tunis’s thriving café culture and chic shopping to the tasty cuisine and extensive Roman and Phoenician ruins. Four nights would allow visitors ample time to see Tunis, the capital city; the ruins at Carthage; and Sidi Bou Said, a pretty seaside town with whitewashed buildings that reminded me of Greece’s coastal villages; this could be done as an easy stopover from Morocco or Europe. More time (ideally about 9 nights) would allow thorough exploration of the sights, including Dougga, one of Africa’s best-preserved Roman cities and Kairouan, where the impressive mosques and bustling souqs are a big draw.
