TURKEY: CAVING IN CAPPADOCIA

Since Lisa Sun’s recent visit to Turkey, we’re keen on Cappadocia! Many people head to Turkey to explore Istanbul and sail the Mediterranean aboard a gulet cruise – and those are very worthwhile things to do – but Lisa discovered exactly why Cappadocia also deserves several nights of any trip to Turkey. The strange landscape has thousands of “fairy rock” chimneys jutting raggedly up from the ground; below them lie ancient underground churches, painted frescoes, and complex mazes of tunnels that beg to be explored. Several “rock hotels” even allow guests to have the experience of staying in a rock cave without sacrificing luxury – Lisa loved the cozy, boutique-style of Temenni Evi and the new Anatolian Houses, which manages to be airy and bright despite the fact that it is literally carved into the rock. In addition to exploring the underground cities, visitors to Cappadocia can visit the Goreme Open Air Museum, have lunch in one of the small cities, take a hot-air balloon ride, stop into one of Turkey’s new wineries, or see the beautiful Ihlara Valley.
